OOK at a desert and you see sand. For the inner eye of the Kathiawadi of Gujarat, western India, out of the sand they see a myriad of bright primary colours. Images come out of the colours, bringing life into the landscape.   Their needlecraft traces vines with multitudes of green leaves and many coloured flowers. Desert peacocks boldly display their pride. Animals are included, and often tiny flashes of silver which, according to tradition, are there to reflect the glory of creation all around.     Embroidery like this has decorated desert tents, and in this creativity a drama of desert life has developed. EW Kathiawadi survive as desert nomads but thankfully their authentic sense of colour and imagination has not yet died.     For over 40 years in partnership with a religious Order of Dominicans, we have worked with groups of Kathiawadi who have re-settled, and strongly encouraged them not to let go of their unique visioning and their skill. Don't forget to order new cushion pads (pillows) to go inside your covers. You should replace your cushions not only for appearances sake, but also for hygiene reasons. Don't expect your cushions to perform properly indefinitely! Our pads (cushion fillings) are specially made for us in the UK to a particularly high standard. These luxurious cushion pads are feather extra-filled; whilst bolsters, which need to be firmer, have «hollow-fibre» filling. Both have «Schedule 3» fire-retardant lining of mill-weave cotton. Feathers turn out to be a better bet than synthetics. Not only are they much more comfortable, but also they are the least likely to present any allergic reactions. The key is to replace the cushions every few years to ensure they remain healthy. Plump up the pads after each use so they are most comfortable for you and always look at their best. We use very soft cleaned European white duck-feather in our pads, of which a surplus exists so it is best they are used instead of going to landfill. Synthetic cushions are based on petroleum oil.
