.") Bakbak is the rich dark brown bark of the abaca plant. The bark naturally falls off the plant whilst a new bark grows underneath. Harvested abaca («Manila hemp»), a very strong fibre, is the central trunk of the plant. Until the bright idea to use the bark to weave baskets, bakbak was considered waste. Years ago, One Village encouraged a local social project to develop this basket-making idea so that livelihoods could be developed for the benefit of landless poor. The idea worked, and the resulting cooperative society continues today as a significant service to that community.

Exceptional bowl-shape Africa basket made of ugwafu and intamyi grass bound over with grass and arranged in a spiral.
An outer ring is defined by the application of cotton fabric in grey colour sewn to the face side of the spiral, whilst lower into the bowl another ring covers the spiral with fibre from the banana plant, thus together forming two circles of unity.
To achieve this neatness of finish, not only does the basket itself need great care in its making but also the unusual covering with fabric and banana-fibre requires from the producer exceptional patience and skill.
