The clay arrives in the nearby Ganges, naturally carried there downstream and forming a riverbed silt.

Washed forwards through northern India, this is exceptional clay for terracotta. Its use in pottery-making helps necessary water management, because the clay needs to be removed to clear the river estuary.

This craft is produced at a new village pottery set up for the purpose, a short distance to the north of Kolkata. All the processes are done by hand. The pottery is very high fired for terracotta, at 1050°C.

Ökopots are robust – suitable for microwave and the dishwasher. This crockery is totally free from lead or cadmium.

Because of Oko's unglazed surfaces, water can permeate the terracotta during washing. Wash thoroughly but do not soak this crockery in water! Be sure to allow the pots to dry off before placing the pottery on delicate surfaces such as polished wood.

It is because of the environmental plusses that this pottery is named Öko, from the early Greek word for «house» (the word from which «eco» originates).
