    Perhaps the beginnings of progress can be seen when companies accept social responsibilities beyond their immediate stakeholders – for example by setting standards within external suppliers.
    Those companies that strive for «best practice» follow inspirational examples that shine out from the works of earlier generations.
    But today – internationally – more often than not the situation for workers remains hard and is getting worse as
inequalities
increase.
    In the world at large, earnings below £1 a day are common, with serious social, health, and wellbeing consequences for the individuals involved.
