Tassar wild silk cushion cover,
40cm square
«Tassar» is wild silk, from cocoons harvested from forest trees – here from the forests of Orissa, eastern India. This silk thread is extremely strong, much more so than smoother «mulberry» cultivated silk. Our tassar silk is not bleached or dyed but woven to show off its natural slightly uneven colour and the gorgeous texture. Pre-shrunk tassar silk front; mulberry silk piping around the edges and to form the back (with pillowcase-style tuck-in).

Shyrdaks are traditional felts normally used for walls and as floor rugs in yurts of the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, Central Asia.
Here the authentic style is made up as a cushion cover with wool front and a cotton back (with pillowcase-style tuck-in).

OOK at a desert and you see sand. For the Kathiawadi of Gujarat, western India, the sand is a myriad of bright primary colours. Images come out of the colours, bringing life into the landscape.

Their needlecraft traces vines with multitudes of green leaves and many coloured flowers. Desert peacocks boldly display their pride. Animals are included, and often tiny flashes of silver which, according to tradition, are there to reflect the glory of creation all around.

Embroidery like this has decorated desert tents, and in this creativity a drama of desert life has developed.
EW Kathiawadi survive as desert nomads
but thankfully their authentic sense of colour and imagination has not yet died.
We have worked with groups of Kathiawadi who have re-settled, and strongly encouraged them not to let go of their unique visioning and their skill.

Whether you choose the traditional bright colours, or the sophisticated cushions that are not so colourfully flamboyant – the dexterity of the Kathiawadi craft is undoubtedly plain to see.
